How do I get to it?
1. Start at the Grafton Public Library homepage. Click Online and Digital Resources from the list on the left.
2. Scroll down to "Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia".
3. If you are in the library, from that page click on Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia.
4. If you are at work or home, from that page click the appropriate link and type in your library barcode number and click Go.
5. Click the graphic on the left.
How does it work? Try it out!
At the top of the screen is the search box. The default is to search the Grolier encyclopedia, but you can tell it to also search all Grolier products, which would then include the Encyclopedia Americana, by clicking the circle next to the name. Type OLYMPICS and click Go. The database will search the full-text of its contents for the word(s) you type in. To search only article titles, use the Advanced Search.
The results screen has articles. Click an article title to read the information. Words within the text may be underlined as hyperlinks, so if you click on one you will be taken to the article on that word. At the bottom of the article is a link with information on how to cite the source for a bibliography.
Also on an individual article page you may see a long list of pictures. You may also see flags, panoramas, maps, sound files, animations, videos, or cutaways. You will need Quicktime installed on your computer to view most of these files.
From the article text screen you can choose to print it or email it. Printouts in the library cost 10¢ a page. If you email it, the article should be in your mailbox within minutes. For media files, use the browser menus to print or save the pages.
At the top of an article screen you may see tabs for Web links and Periodicals. The web links take you to sites relating to your topic, and the periodicals will be full-text articles from a variety of journals and magazines. Once you get to the periodicals results page, you can search for more periodical articles.
Bookmark This Page will put the URL into your Favorites or Bookmarks list.
There is an Advanced Search, which lets you do type in more than one search term and/or search article titles only.

On the right side of the main search page are other choices: Browse Articles, Brain Jam, News, Today is…, Research Starters, Timelines, Event Planner, and Quizzes and Games. The Browse and Quiz options also have choices beside them when you hold the mouse over the buttons.

- Browse lets you search by topic, then subtopic. .
- Brain Jam takes you to a page on a particular topic. The contents of this page change each month. The menu on the right has links for sections of the essay plus links to related subjects. On the top you may see tabs for Quiz, Web links, and Teachers’ Resources.
- News articles will change weekly and come from a variety of national and international news sources.
- Today is… changes daily and has events that happened and people born on this date. There is an option to change the date.
- Research Starters gives suggestions for picking a research topic and has some ideas by subject. Timelines is broken down by period and has events from various countries. Everything is hyperlinked for easy access to information.
- Event Planner changes every three months or so and has ideas for celebrations. There may be article and web links.
- Quizzes and Games has a variety of puzzles to keep minds sharp and to test memories.
